2020 · Solo — capture, playback and swing analysis
The coach’s shot and yours, measured against each other on the green
第1章Chapter 01 — The problem
Being told is not being shown
Coaching a golf swing is mostly a description problem. A coach can see what you are doing wrong and can say it, but "you swayed off the ball" only means something if you have felt the difference. Video helps and still leaves you watching yourself from one fixed angle, on a screen, after the fact.
The premise was to put the coach on the course with you — not a diagram of a swing, and not a video of one, but the coach themselves, at scale, walkable-around, doing the shot you are about to attempt.
第2章Chapter 02 — What I built
The coach, captured
A real coach was captured volumetrically on a real course, and plays back in headset as a figure you can stand next to and watch from any angle. Their shot and yours sit side by side — "Gary’s chip shot" against "your chip shot" — so the comparison is direct rather than described.
The swing itself is tracked and broken into the parameters a coach would actually call out: club head speed, impact loft, distance travelled, quality of stroke, and whether the head stayed still or swayed or lifted through the shot. The arc of the club is drawn in the air behind the swing as a fan of positions, which turns a motion that happens too fast to see into a shape you can look at.
I built all of it — the capture, the playback, and the swing analysis on top.
第3章Chapter 03 — The hard part
Volumetric video in 2020
This was 2020, and volumetric capture was not a solved pipeline you could pick up. Getting a person recorded on a golf course, reconstructed, and playing back inside a headset at a frame rate that did not break the illusion was most of the work, and none of it was a matter of configuring an existing tool.
The analysis side had a different difficulty: a swing measurement is only useful if a golfer recognises it. Head movement reported as a number means nothing; reported as "swayed" or "lifted" it maps onto something a coach has already told them a hundred times.
第4章Chapter 04 — The result
The oldest thing here, and still the only one of its kind
Delivered as a venue installation. It remains the earliest project on this site and the only one that uses captured volumetric video rather than authored 3D — everything else here is built, and this one was recorded.
